I found my path to being a somatic psychotherapist and clinical social worker through my first career as an educator. Through my experiences as a teacher, I realized what I cared for most and love about teaching was building one-on-one relationships with my students and supporting them in efforts and concerns that went far beyond the four walls of my classroom.
This led me back to my alma mater, The University of North Carolina, where I earned my Master of Social Work. I found limits in more cognitive approaches to therapy from my own training and personal experiences. I found that Somatic Experiencing and my background as a yoga teacher and student drew attention to what had been missing in my previous studies: connection to the body. Our body remembers and stores so much information, why not draw from its innate wisdom? As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, I have found that integrating body and touch-based practices as incredibly helpful in supporting people in connecting with their authentic, whole selves.
As a first-generation, Indian-American who grew up in a predominately White, low-resourced part of rural North Carolina, I have been acutely aware of the impacts of racial, social, and inter-generational trauma in my own body. My lived experiences have informed my commitment to making holistic care accessible and available to people with marginalized identities. It also has informed my interests as a clinician and my experience in addressing pervasive forms of oppression that impact individuals. In creating my own practice, I remain committed to continuing to learn how the intersection of our various identities and trauma (our own and inter-/multi-generational) can impact each of us differently and require different resources to be tended to. Above all through my experiences, I have come to learn and value healing in relationship and community, and hope our paths may cross in that journey.
Part of my decision in creating this practice was in an effort to merge and integrate my personal and professional practices and values into one shared space. While I love my work and continuously learning, I do also enjoy breaks from being a therapist or yoga teacher. In my spare time you can find me chanting in Sanskrit with my harmonium, weight lifting at the gym, making art, soaking up sunshine outside, taking walks with friends, attempting to improve my improv skills, or cooking some vegetarian treat to share with my family.
